Electronic artist and musician Rena Rasouli, recording as Venus Volcanism, makes her solo debut with Rizitiko, released on Optimo's Weaponise Your Sound sub-label. Drawing from the traditional folk songs of her native island of Crete, Rasouli weaves these ancient melodies together with electronic and natural ambient soundscapes to create something deeply singular. The project grew from her academic thesis exploring the healing power of sound and music rooted in traditional dialect.
Rizitiko is a work of remarkable depth, grounded in the belief that the melodic use of voice is humanity's oldest form of therapy. Rasouli reclaims these traditionally male-sung songs in her own female voice, bringing an intimacy to the performances — one she likens to that of a lullaby — while the compositions channel the emotions tied to healing and a profound connection to the collective unconscious. With artwork by Diet Clinic, this is a thoughtfully crafted release that merges ethnomusicology and electronic music in a way that feels both timeless and wholly modern.
