Cambridge heavies Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats return with their seventh full-length album, Shapes of Midnight, a brilliantly macabre concept record partly inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's The Masque of the Red Death and the unsettling anxieties of the modern world. Coming two years after their synth-laden Giallo-inspired opus Nell' Ora Blu, this latest offering sees the band continuing to evolve while staying rooted in the late '60s and early '70s heavy psychedelic rock that has defined them since founder K.R. Starrs first assembled the group around 2009.
Shapes of Midnight showcases the band at their most inventive, weaving together blues, thunderous riffs, and swirling synths into something both haunting and irresistibly compelling. Standout moments like the driving early single "Don't Let It Control You" demonstrate Uncle Acid's rare gift for crafting music that is simultaneously dark and deeply hummable — pop songwriting dressed in a death mask, with hooks that linger long after the needle lifts.
