Small Change is Tom Waits' fourth studio album, first released in 1976 and recorded at Wally Heider's Studio 3 in Hollywood. It found a wider audience than his earlier work and remains one of his most popular records. Waits filters classic jazz, Tin Pan Alley, and Stephen Foster through his own singular worldview, backed by a live orchestra and jazz drummer Shelly Manne.
The songs are by turns heartbreaking, hilarious, and always vivid, populated by barflies, drifters, and late-night dreamers. "Tom Traubert's Blues," "The Piano Has Been Drinking," "I Wish I Was in New Orleans," "Step Right Up," and "Invitation to the Blues" show his gift for storytelling and have influenced generations of songwriters since.
