OOOOOOOHHH...ON THE TLC TIP is the next wave of street smart modern dance music, a vibrant angular blend of hip-hop and R&B by a trio of enlightened sisters from the 'hood: T-Boz, Left Eye and Chilli. Bringing a fresh liberated perspective to a genre dominated by hordes of happy hedonists and gangsta wannabes, TLC puts a tough new spin on the girl group vibe.
TLC connects to a tradition of funky, tough-talkin', please-me divas that stretches all the way back to the likes of Millie Jackson, Dinah Washington and Bessie Smith. TLC makes it clear on songs like "Ain't 2 Proud To Beg," "Shock Dat Monkey," "Bad By Myself" and "Depend On Myself" that they like a good time as much as the next gal but that self-respect and mutual respect come first, and that girls have to keep their men in line.
Musically their arrangements often jump back and forth between massed R&B harmonies (a la P-Funk), and spacey rhythm loops (their collaboration with Marley Marl on "Das Da Way We Like 'Em"). But their ability to work within more traditional dance grooves ("What About Your Friends") and ballad forms ("Baby-Baby-Baby") makes OOOOOOOHHH...ON THE TLC TIP a hip hop record with real pop appeal.
