The Jayhawks mark their 40th anniversary with Sanctuary Park, their first studio album in six years and a deeply personal record rooted in love, memory, and the natural world. Produced by the legendary Bob Ezrin — known for his work with Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, and Alice Cooper — the album reunites him with the band for the first time since their 2000 release Smile, with Ezrin drawing the group to Toronto in pursuit of the warmth and sweetness that has always defined their sound.
Frontman Gary Louris pens songs that play beautifully to his strengths: rich harmonies, hummable melodies, and lyrics that balance quiet resignation with genuine tenderness. Standouts like "Keeping Our Heads Above Water" and "Kingston Girl" showcase the band's gift for effortlessly catchy, emotionally resonant songwriting, while the rockier "Always and a Day" proves they can shift gears with ease. The reflective title track serves as the emotional centerpiece, its melancholic minor-key arrangement and intimate lyrics capturing something rare — a sense of place where memory, love, and longing quietly intertwine.
