Released in 1986, Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express stands as one of the most celebrated albums in The Go-Betweens' catalog and a landmark of Australian alternative rock. The Brisbane-born band — anchored by the songwriting partnership of Robert Forster and Grant McLennan — had been steadily refining their sound, and this record captured them at a creative peak, earning widespread critical acclaim that has only grown over the decades.
The album showcases the distinctive interplay between Forster's nervy, angular compositions and McLennan's graceful, melodic sensibility, woven together with lush string arrangements and a warm, organic rhythm section. The result is a record full of heart, intelligence, and quiet emotional depth — the kind of album that rewards repeated listening and continues to resonate with fans of thoughtful, beautifully crafted songwriting.
