Originally released in 1987 and produced by Mayo Thompson of Pere Ubu and Red Krayola, Brave Words stands as one of The Chills' most celebrated works. Hailing from Dunedin, New Zealand, The Chills were flag bearers of that city's uniquely innovative independent music scene, helping bring the iconic Flying Nun sound to audiences around the world. AllMusic has called it "The Chills' finest album," and it remains a touchstone of 1980s alternative rock.
This expanded and remastered edition, released by Fire Records in 2023, was remixed directly from the original multitrack tapes under the supervision of The Chills' own Martin Phillipps, allowing beloved tracks like "Wet Blanket," "Rain," and "Night Of Chill Blue" to reach their full sonic potential. With 18 tracks spanning the band's creative peak of the era, this release offers both longtime fans and newcomers the definitive version of an album long praised as a masterpiece. The gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeves makes for a beautifully presented package worthy of the music inside.
