Stephan Mathieu's FrequencyLib / Sad Mac Studies is a landmark work of early digital experimentation, originally released in 2001 on Mille Plateaux's esteemed Ritornell sublabel. A product of the late 1990s/early 2000s Pismo PowerBook era, the album stands as a compelling document of digitally manipulated audio, exploring what Mathieu calls the entropic possibilities hidden within popular music. The track selection for FrequencyLib was curated by fellow artist and collaborator Ekkehard Ehlers.
This 2022 reissue from Umeboshi pairs FrequencyLib with the rare companion EP Sad Mac Studies, which was originally issued in an extremely limited run on Robert Meijer's boutique En/Of label. Where FrequencyLib meditates on the decay and transformation of popular music, Sad Mac Studies applies similar deconstructive processes to the beloved sonic world of Sesame Street, making for a fascinatingly cohesive and thought-provoking listening experience across both works.
