Pressed on limited edition, gold vinyl. This is an indie exclusive and limited in pressings. A fever dream in sonic form, The Alien Coast is the first album St. Paul & The Broken Bones recorded in their hometown of Birmingham. Produced by Matt Ross-Spang (Drive-By Truckers, Margo Price) - the bands fourth full-length is a dizzying convergence of rock & roll and R&B, psychedelia and stoner metal, gospel and jazz-funk. At turns explosive, elegant, and thrillingly unhinged - it makes for a majestic backdrop to the groups visceral exploration of the strangest dimensions of the human psyche.

Not sure how they managed this blend

So y'know how concrete is a mix if lime, sand, and gravel? The foundation of this record is a mix of James Brown, Otis Redding, and Curtis Mayfield. They then built layers of Prince, Peter Gabriel, and Depeche Mode on top. If that sounds nuts to you, you're right!

This works a lot better as record than a CD or an MP3 because a lot of these tracks are just not as good in isolation. As a cohesive in sequence experience they hit all their marks. The mix of styles, and the shout singing in falsetto does make this a challenging though worthwhile listen.

Lastly fun game if you have never seen pics or videos of this band: listen and form a mental picture of the frontman, and then check what he looks like. You have never been more wrong.
