The soundtrack for 13 Reasons Why offers a brooding, synth-centric selection of tunes from among those featured in the 2017 Netflix series. Music played a special role on the show, with its teen protagonist spending a lot of his time listening to cassette mixtapes made by a former classmate who had recently committed suicide. The track list opens with a somber cover of Yazoo's "Only You" by Selena Gomez (who also appears on an acoustic version of her own "Kill Em with Kindness"). Other covers include Echo & the Bunnymen's "The Killing Moon" by electropop duo Roman Remains and a Chromatics cover of Neil Young's "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)" (called simply "Into the Black" here). The '80s are also represented by original recordings by the Cure, the Call, the Alarm, and Joy Division ("Love Will Tear Us Apart"). While in the minority, more uptempo, contemporary selections include Sir Sly's "High" and Hamilton Leithauser + Rostam's "A 1000 Times." ~ Marcy Donelson
