Sonny Clark arrived fully formed on his supremely swinging 1957 Blue Note debut, Dial "S" For Sonny, showcasing his inventive piano style alongside a top-flight sextet featuring Art Farmer on trumpet, Hank Mobley on tenor saxophone, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Wilbur Ware on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. The result is a landmark hard bop recording that highlights Clark as both a commanding performer and a gifted composer, with four of the album's six tunes penned by Clark himself.
From the moody, minor-key title piece to the bright and fleet-footed "Bootin' It" and the sprightly "Shoutin' on a Riff," Clark's originals sit beautifully alongside two well-chosen standards, including a stunning ballad reading of "It Could Happen to You" and a Gershwin showcase in "Love Walked In." This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series reissue is all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio directly from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Optimal, making it an excellent way to experience this timeless session.
