The 2003 film SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE stars Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson and chronicles the humorous romantic travails of the past-50 pair (past 60 in the latter's case). Just as the film was praised for its disregard of the youth-culture imperative, so the soundtrack offers a remarkably sophisticated selection of songs. Sporting a mix of jazz vocals, doo-wop, Brazilian, and French music, the disc is unremittingly romantic.
Things kick off with the inimitable trumpet and voice of Louis Armstrong on "La Vie En Rose." Eventually, the listener moves through everything from the Flamingos' moody 1950s classic "I Only Have Eyes For You" to bossa nova queen Astrud Gilberto shifting into samba mode for "So Nice (Summer Samba)," and French crooner Charles Trenet cooing sensually on "Que Reste-T'il De Nos Amour." A second version of "La Vie En Rose" closes out the album, by a vocalist easily as distinctive as Armstrong, if not quite as accomplished--a promising young talent named Jack Nicholson.
