Original Motion Picture Soundtrack: Akira is the score to Katsuhiro Otomo's landmark 1988 anime film, composed by Shoji Yamashiro and performed by the Japanese collective Geinoh Yamashirogumi. The group blends traditional folk and world music influences with cutting-edge electronic production. The result is one of the most distinctive and influential film scores to come out of Japan.
The music pairs chanting voices, Balinese gamelan, and Japanese festival-style percussion with synthesizers and early digital sampling. It sounds both ancient and futuristic, which suits the film's story of Neo-Tokyo. Tracks such as "Battle Against the Clown," "Winds Over Neo-Tokyo," and "Tetsuo" show the range of Yamashiro's vision, from raw ritual intensity to eerie, atmospheric tension.
