The Shaggs were three sisters from New Hampshire--Dorothy, Helen and Betty Wiggin. With exuberance and naive confidence, and the further commitment of their father, Austin, who provided financial assistance, the girls were brought to a studio near Boston to record this album. The results sound absolutely like nothing else in our popular culture. Where the girls' intent to sound like some of their favorite bands missed its mark, their desire to sing songs with lyrics extolling simple virtues and pleasures is fully realized. The compelling force of PHILOSOPHY OF THE WORLD comes from the paeans sung to family and community, all delivered with a mix of confidence and humility.
