Recorded in March 1956, Blue Serge stands as the defining statement from Serge Chaloff, a Boston-born baritone saxophonist whose remarkable agility and lyrical sensibility set him apart as one of the earliest bebop practitioners on his instrument. A veteran of Woody Herman's celebrated "Four Brothers" saxophone section alongside Stan Getz and Zoot Sims, Chaloff assembled an all-star quartet for this session, joining forces with pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, and drummer Philly Joe Jones for a masterfully laid-back run through jazz standards including "A Handful of Stars" and "All the Things You Are."
This Blue Note Tone Poet Edition brings Blue Serge back to life with uncompromising fidelity, produced by Joe Harley and mastered by Kevin Gray directly from the original analog master tapes. The result is a mono listening experience pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Record Technology Inc. and presented in a deluxe tip-on jacket — making this an exceptional way to experience one of the most quietly brilliant jazz albums of the 1950s.
