Originally released in 1996, Roots is the sixth studio album from Brazilian metal band Sepultura and stands as one of the most talked-about records in their catalog. It finds the band pairing down-tuned, groove-heavy metal with Brazilian musical textures, and it includes the singles "Roots Bloody Roots," "Attitude," and "Ratamahatta."
The album draws on percussion and traditional elements from the band's homeland, with contributions from Carlinhos Brown and the Xavantes Tribe, plus a guest lyric from Korn's Jonathan Davis. Heavy, raw, and rhythm-driven, Roots remains a defining statement of Sepultura's identity and a major influence on the groove and nu-metal sounds that followed.
