Hippies, Thugs And Heroes is Richard Thompson's 2026 release on New West Records, arriving as a relatively quick follow-up to the acclaimed Ship To Shore from 2024. Recorded with the same sharp band, now joined by horns and accordions, it opens with chiming 12-string guitars in a jangly, Byrds-like spirit.
True to its title, the album is a gallery of outsiders and everyday characters, from a toxic charmer in "Cocaine Walking, Booze Talking" to the hard-working everyman of "Unsung Hero." Thompson pairs his sharp storytelling with intricate guitar work, making this a richly detailed folk-rock set that rewards close listening.
