A decade-plus after emerging under the copyright-infringing moniker of Red Cross, these Californians made the full transition from bratty punksters to fine practitioners of pure, jangly pop on THIRD EYE. And Rhino has done a great service by reissuing this lost gem, which has been out of print for years and is arguably the greatest retro-stab of its era not named BANDWAGONESQUE. The album's centerpiece is still the irresistibly precious-yet-naughty "Bubblegum Factory," which asks its muse to "Take me on a tour of a bubblegum factory/I want to see where love is made." But there's not a bad song in the bunch, most of them achieving a sublime, 45-worthy perfection.
