Recorded in the cozy confines of a club in Hamburg, Germany during a European tour, SLIP STITCH AND PASS finds the band taking a slower and much funkier approach to the intricate improvisation that's become their trademark. Marked by a fairly loose vibe, the band's set includes three covers (Talking Heads' "Cities," ZZ Top's "Jesus Just Left Chicago" and the barbershop quartet standard "Hello My Baby"). There's also the first-time release of concert favorite "Mike's Song," on which Phish throw in the kind of levity that's rare among musicians who are this technically accomplished, spoofing Jim Morrison's recitation from "The End" and referencing Pink Floyd's "Careful With That Axe, Eugene." A lounge-style take on "Lawnboy" is offered up before Phish jumps into a funky jam called "Weekapaug Groove" featuring lots of punchy piano, popping riffs and the classic coda from "Can't You Hear Me Knocking."
