Released in 1983 on Genetic Records, XL·1 is the second solo album from Pete Shelley, the iconic frontman of post-punk legends Buzzcocks. Produced by Martin Rushent, the album leans fully into the electronic sound of the era, delivering synth-driven tracks that sit comfortably alongside the early '80s New Wave movement.
What makes this release a genuinely fascinating artifact is its forward-thinking bonus feature: one track is an actual computer program for the Sinclair ZX Spectrum, designed to display lyrics and graphics in sync with the music. A locking groove is cut into the vinyl before that track to prevent accidental playback, and the record ships with a square insert containing ZX Spectrum instructions — a remarkable time capsule of early digital experimentation in music.
