Australian-born, Brighton-based artist Penelope Trappes delivers her fifth solo album, A Requiem, a deeply personal and hauntingly atmospheric work released in 2025 on One Little Independent Records. To create it, Trappes traveled to Glasgow to connect with her Celtic ancestry, channeling that journey alongside intense introspection and psychedelic therapy into ten ambient soundscapes that explore cross-generational trauma, grief, death, and ultimately, renewal.
A Requiem carries a solemn, ceremonial weight that echoes religious music while remaining profoundly intimate, balancing dark and light, rough and smooth in a way that mirrors the emotional arc of grief itself. The album moves through heavy, shadowed textures toward something more open, yet never fully releases its tension — a deliberate and powerful artistic choice that makes this 34-minute listening experience both cathartic and unforgettable.
