Gonçalo F. Cardoso, the creative force behind Discrepant Records, returns under his Papillon alias with Banco, a compelling dive into the world of experimental and tropical-inflected sound design. Inspired by Henri Charrière's legendary Papillon books, this 2020 release marks Cardoso's long-awaited return to vinyl following his debut Papillon album in 2013 and a series of cassette releases in the years between.
Banco ventures deep into what can only be described as "tropical disquiet," weaving together six tracks of richly atmospheric electronic and experimental textures, including a collaboration with guitarist Mike Cooper. Adding to its intrigue, Side A closes with a locked groove, a nod to the adventurous, boundary-pushing spirit that runs throughout the entire record and makes it a rewarding listen for fans of challenging, imaginative sound work.
