Moussolou is the debut album from Oumou Sangaré, the Malian singer and songwriter who first emerged in the late 1980s and went on to become one of West Africa's most celebrated voices. Released on World Circuit, it introduced an artist who would become a defining figure in Wassoulou music.
Sangaré wrote the material herself, pairing her commanding, emotive vocals with the rhythmic, earthy sound of the Wassoulou tradition of southern Mali. The songs speak to the lives and struggles of women, and her frank, powerful voice gave the music an urgency that has made her a lasting inspiration. Moussolou remains an essential starting point for anyone exploring her catalog or the sounds of Malian music.
