World Tour gathers live performances by Oscar Peterson recorded between 1969 and 1996, a span that shows the pianist at several stages of his career. The concerts come from Detroit, São Paulo, Basel, Auckland and Toronto, and they present him in settings from solo piano to trio, quartet and a gathering of friends. The music is released as part of the celebration of his centennial, and it honors the legacy of the man often called the "Maharaja of the Keyboard."
What makes these performances special is the range of Peterson's artistry: dazzling technique, deep swing, and a warmth that comes through in ballads and blues alike. Hearing him alone at the keyboard, then interacting with different bandmates and guests, shows how much he valued spontaneity and friendship on stage. For longtime admirers and newcomers alike, World Tour is an intimate look at one of jazz's great virtuosos in live performance.
