Released in 1990, Cause of Death stands as one of Obituary's most celebrated albums and a landmark record in the death metal genre. Following the success of their debut Slowly We Rot, the band returned with a refined and devastating sound, cementing their place among the genre's elite alongside acts like Morbid Angel and Death. With John Tardy's unmistakable vocals and the crushing guitar work of Trevor Peres and James Murphy, the album quickly became essential listening for extreme metal fans worldwide.
The music on Cause of Death is defined by its slow, grinding heaviness balanced with moments of ferocious intensity, creating an atmosphere that is both menacing and hypnotic. Highlights include the band's bludgeoning originals as well as a memorable cover of Celtic Frost's "Circle of the Tyrants," which fits seamlessly into the album's punishing sonic landscape. Recorded at the legendary Morrisound Studios in Tampa, Florida, the album captures a rawness and power that has kept it relevant and revered for decades.
