Los Angeles and Athens-based artist Nour Mobarak brings an extraordinary vision to Dafne Phono, a bold reimagining of the world's first opera, Dafne, originally composed by Jacopo Peri and Ottavio Rinuccini in 1598. Drawing on the myth of Daphne and Apollo, Mobarak reconstructs this foundational work through some of the world's most phonetically complex languages, building on histories of avant-garde sound and her longstanding interest in mechanized voice and memory.
Released on the Recital label in conjunction with Mobarak's exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, Dafne Phono captures the A-side as a stereo adaptation of the artist's multichannel sound installation, while the B-side features a live-processed recording from the libretto's translation process conducted in Namibia. Spanning experimental, electronic, and world music influences, this is an ambitious and deeply conceptual work from an artist whose practice ranges across sculpture, performance, poetry, and music.
