Few artists captured the haunting, avant-garde spirit of early 1970s rock quite like Nico. A cornerstone of the Velvet Underground's legendary debut album, Nico went on to forge a deeply singular solo career marked by her distinctive baritone voice and darkly poetic songwriting. BBC Session 1971, released by Gearbox Records, preserves a remarkable live performance recorded for John Peel's iconic BBC Radio One program Top Gear on February 2nd, 1971, and first broadcast later that same month.
This four-track EP captures Nico performing songs drawn from her solo catalog in an intimate, live radio setting — a format that suits her stark, hypnotic style beautifully. The session, which was the first of two she would record for John Peel (the second came in 1974), was previously only available for a brief period in 1988 through John Peel and Clive Selwood's Strange Fruit label, making this Gearbox Records reissue a welcome opportunity to experience a genuinely rare piece of rock history.
