Space 1.8 is the debut album from Nala Sinephro, the Caribbean-Belgian composer, harpist, and synth player, first released on Warp Records in 2021. It blends modular synthesizers with live saxophone, piano, drums, and strings, and features collaborators including Nubya Garcia, Shirley Tetteh, and James Mollison. It has been widely praised as one of the standout records of its year.
The music is marked by an abiding calm, a quiet that can tighten into tension and then loosen again. Gentle, enveloping passages of sax and billowy piano give way to sharper moments of snare and horn trading retorts, while Sinephro's synths shift in pitch and timbre. The result is a hypnotic dialogue between acoustic and electronic sound that sits between ambient music and contemporary jazz.
