This is the last of the Moondog "jazz" albums on Prestige--put together from a number of home sessions and street recordings the blind itinerant musician had done sometime in the mid-'50s. As avant-garde as this stuff is, it still has a gritty street cred that is very appealing. At the same time, Moondog's homespun ensembles and rudimentary polyrhythms sound like a kindergarten music recess-- innocents cavorting on the Bowery or the waterfront. THE STORY OF MOONDOG also features album art by none other than Andy Warhol, done when he was still a bonafide commercial artist, well before his pop artist notoriety.
