Miles Davis's Milestones stands as a pivotal moment in jazz history, capturing the legendary trumpeter at a crucial transition point in 1958. This classic album showcases Davis's remarkable versatility as he plays both trumpet and piano, bridging the gap between bebop and the modal revolution that would define his subsequent work.
The album features memorable blues material and introduces modalism to jazz through its groundbreaking title track, earning a five-star review from AllMusic for its exceptional small band interplay. With contributions from his mainstay sidemen including Red Garland and Paul Chambers, Milestones serves as both a farewell to post-bop harmony and a bold step toward the innovative sound that would make Davis a jazz icon.
