Unlike MGMT's platinum-selling debut Oracular Spectacular, which had three chart-topping hits ("Time to Pretend," "Electric Feel," and "Kids"), the duo's follow-up is designed to be a congruent album of psychedelic, non-single-oriented material.
Congratulations is the second studio album by American psychedelic rock band MGMT, originally released in April 2010 via Columbia Records.
Despite being founded in Connecticut by Benjamin Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden in 2002, MGMT from the start sounded more Brooklyn than Bedford Avenue. Their productions are hard to describe, but if you mix psychedelic with proto-electro punk, shake it up with art noise and add some indie-pop, you just might have got the picture.
The album is a departure from the Synth Pop style that first brought the band acclaim on their major label debut, Oracular Spectacular (2007), and features a more psychedelic, progressive, and guitar-driven sound.
Andrew VanWyngarden has stated that the album is influenced by the band's massive rise in popularity since Oracular Spectacular's release. "It's us trying to deal with all the craziness that's been going on since our last album took off. Sometimes it just doesn't feel natural".
The album reached #2 on the US Billboard 200, #4 on the UK and #9 on the Australian albums charts.
This double album 2LP record set is a 2014 reissue on 180 gram audiophile vinyl with printed inner sleeves, pressed in Europe via Music On Vinyl.
