After decades of mythologized obscurity, David Barbe's mid-to-late '80s post-punk trio Mercyland finally emerges from the underground with their long-awaited self-titled collection. Nourished by a steady diet of Minutemen, Hüsker Dü, and Mission of Burma, the band crafted a raw, urgent sound that was deeply tied to the American underground scene of the era.
Mercyland unveils eleven tracks recorded from 1985-1987, capturing the work of Barbe alongside original guitarist Mark Craig and drummer Harry Joiner in all their unpolished glory. This limited edition release on black smoke vinyl offers collectors a rare glimpse into the formative years of Barbe, who would later join the reformed Sugar and go on to produce nearly every Drive-By Truckers album, making this a essential piece of alternative rock history.
