Batu Malablab: Suite For Prepared Piano, Flute And Electronics finds Martin Schmidt (of Matmos) crafting a unique sonic tapestry that merges the traditions of electronic, classical, and global folk influences into an experimental suite. Drawing inspiration from Balinese gamelan and avant-garde masters like John Cage, this 2015 release explores unfamiliar musical terrain with prepared piano, an array of flutes, and innovative electronics.
Portions of Batu Malablab were recorded live in Baltimore and Asheville, capturing an “exotic fantasy of Baltimore” through immersive quadrophonic sound and home studio textures. Featuring collaborator Jon “Wobbly” Leidecker on cutting-edge MIDI technology, the album’s blend of chimes, gongs, and free-flowing melodies creates an unpredictable listening journey—making it an essential addition for fans of experimental and boundary-pushing sound art.
