Rooted in the rich artistic legacy of American Regionalist painter Walter Inglis Anderson, Mississippi Murals is a stunning collaborative improvisation brought to life by guitarist Luther Dickinson (N. Mississippi All-Stars), pianist John Medeski, drummer Johnny Vidacovich, and bassist Dominic Davis. Born from a 2016 partnership with the Walter Anderson Museum of Art, the project set out to translate Anderson's breathtaking Community Center Murals into sound, drawing inspiration from the artist's own belief that all movement flows from invisible music found in nature and the cosmos.
The result is a gorgeous tableau of sonic expression, with each track corresponding to a specific mural panel and evoking Anderson's vivid imagery of flora, fauna, and celestial bodies through spontaneous, improvisational soundscapes. Released on Spaceflight Records in 2024, Mississippi Murals captures a rare meeting of musical minds creating something wholly in the moment — a listening experience as immersive and visually evocative as the murals that inspired it.
