Cascades of notes, canyons and rivers of sound: theres something about the pianist-composer Lubomyr Melnyks music that puts you in mind of the natural world at its most awe-inspiring. His 2014 album Corollaries mingled ecstatic surges of piano and delicate, folk-like melodies; 2015s River and Streams offset dreamlike washes of sound with iridescent glimmers of sunlight. No wonder Melnyk, now in his late 60s, has become a kind of cult: few musicians capture so precisely the shifting moods of landscape.
Despite the autumnal hint in its title, there's little suggestion of Melnyk slowing down. Having received critical acclaim and co-headlining the prestigious Royal Festival Hall as part of the Erased Tapes 10th anniversary celebrations, after many years his audience is now both global and growing. The composer is finally gaining a momentum in his career that matches the vibrant, highly active energy of his playing.
