Recorded in 1979 at EMI Studio in Lagos, Nigeria, African Woman is a landmark afro-beat album from Kingsley Aigbologa Bucknor Jr., a disciple of Fela Anikulapo Kuti and member of the legendary Kalakuta Republic. Remarkably, Bucknor — known as the Black Isaiah of Africa — was just 19 years old when he arranged and self-produced this ambitious session, backed by 16 musicians and 10 background singers.
The album delivers two long, hypnotic grooves that showcase everything that makes afro-beat so compelling: fluid and complex drum patterns, powerful horns, rich female chorus vocals, and deeply spiritual and political lyrics. Originally obscure and nearly impossible to find, this Hot Casa Records reissue has been officially licensed and remastered by Carvery (UK), making it an essential listen for fans of African music and afro-beat alike.
