In the mid-'90s alternative pop scene, only Courtney Love received harsher treatment from the (self-appointed) hipster police than Juliana Hatfield. It seemed that no aspect of Hatfield was immune from criticism. She was attacked for her movie-tie-in commercial breakthrough ("Spin The Bottle," a hit single from the REALITY BITES soundtrack), for her often dark lyrics, for disparaging comments she had made about her own guitar-playing skills, for her 1993 revelation that she was still a virgin, and even for her privileged upbringing as a Boston socialite's daughter. The one thing for which few could fault Hatfield was her consummate skill at pop songcraft.
1995's ONLY EVERYTHING consolidates the triumphs of Hatfield's two previous solo albums, cannily adding a newfound attention to production and arrangement detail. The furious "What A Life" showcases Hatfield's aggressive guitar sound, but it is her sharpened sense for pop hooks that makes such songs as "Universal Heartbeat" and "OK OK" instant classics. The delicate "Simplicity Is Beautiful" also foreshadows the minimalist aesthetic of Hatfield's next few releases. ONLY EVERYTHING is a pivotal album in Hatfield's fascinating career.
