Recorded live on September 17, 1989, The Living City captures the Jon Hassell Group performing as part of an audio-visual installation inside the grand, glass-vaulted Winter Garden at New York City's World Financial Center. What makes this performance extraordinary is the presence of Brian Eno, who not only designed the installation — inspired by the sounds of the Ba-Ya-Ka pygmy tribe from Cameroon — but mixed the band live in real time, blending their performance with the immersive installation soundscape.
Part of a series of archival releases from Ndeya documenting Hassell and his group during the late 1980s, this recording features the same musicians behind the celebrated City: Works Of Fiction album, delivering what can best be described as a futuristic, dub-inflected sonic journey — structured and compositional, yet alive with atmosphere. Now available on vinyl for the first time, the audio has been carefully cut across four sides by Stefan Betke (aka Pole), and the gatefold edition includes extensive sleevenotes that shed light on this remarkable and rarely documented chapter in Hassell's Fourth World musical vision.
