John Matthias, known for his collaborations with Radiohead, Matthew Herbert, and Coldcut, and winner of the prestigious PRS Foundation New Music Award, brings a deeply personal and eclectic vision to Geisterfahrer, his third studio album. Released in 2014 on Village Green, this record blends ambient, post-classical composition with heartfelt folk, showcasing Matthias performing on piano, violin, and guitar, with all vocal performances captured live alongside the guitar parts.
Geisterfahrer is a gorgeous, delicate, and diverse suite of thirteen tracks recorded across two sessions in Devon, England — including a 600-year-old school whose extraordinary acoustics were carefully preserved throughout the album. Several tracks were also composed in collaboration with Andrew Prior for the dance-theatre work Eden by Company Chameleon, and the record makes inventive use of the Neurogranular Sampler, an instrument co-invented by Matthias himself at Plymouth University, giving the album a truly unique and otherworldly sonic character.
