John Coltrane with the Red Garland Trio captures the saxophonist in the late summer of 1957, during one of his first full sessions as a leader. He is joined by his then Miles Davis bandmate, pianist Red Garland, along with bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Art Taylor. Released in 1958 on Prestige, the album was later reissued as Traneing In, and it documents an important early chapter in Coltrane's development.
The music is warm, swinging, and rooted in tradition, with Garland's polished arrangements providing a graceful framework. Coltrane keeps pushing against that framework with bursts of lightning-fast, intensely focused playing. His lines twist in and around the trio like a vine growing on a trellis. The result is a session that balances classic hard bop accessibility with early signs of the restless creativity that would define his career.
