This is a wonderfully accessible introduction to the work of an uncompromising artist who's headed in numerous stylistic directions over the decades. FRAGMENTS OF A RAINY SEASON is a live set of some of John Cale's best songs. He plays piano and guitar on these stripped-down pieces in a way that underscores the power these songs possess. Cale plays to an appreciative, but polite audience. For anyone familiar with Cale's career, this is a wonderful reappraisal of some of his favorite work. Anyone new to Cale would do well to sit down with this warm-sounding set and the anthology SEDUCING DOWN THE DOOR. Cale is a fascinating artist, full of surprises and rewards.
