The Closest Thing to Silence is a 2024 collaborative album from pioneering French-Australian musician Ariel Kalma, synthesizer musician Jeremiah Chiu, and violist Marta Sofia Honer. Kalma is a foundational figure in experimental and ambient music whose work stretches back to the 1970s, and this project unites his visionary sensibility with two of contemporary experimental music's most thoughtful voices, both of whom record for the celebrated International Anthem label.
The album is a genuinely four-dimensional listening experience, weaving together Kalma's archival recordings from the '70s, Honer's present-day improvisations on viola, and Chiu's electronic textures and field recordings into something that feels timeless and deeply immersive. Drawing on Kalma's philosophy that music is "the closest thing to silence," the record strips away the noise of the everyday world to reveal something quiet, vast, and profoundly interior — a meeting point between decades, continents, and musical traditions that rewards patient, attentive listening.
