Volume nine in the CONCERT CLASSICS series transports listeners back to the early '80s and the band that was billed at the time as Jack Bruce & Friends. As one would expect, Bruce handles the lead vocals and peerless bass playing, whilst his Friends are Dave "Clem" Clempson on guitar, David Sancious on keyboards and guitar, and Billy Cobham on drums.
The band plays four numbers from I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO DO THIS, including the catchy "Hit and Run." Bruce dips back into his Cream repertoire for four songs, including the set opener, "White Room" (with a "this'll fool them" intro) and "Politician," as a crowd-pleasing finale. Earlier on, Clempson takes a three-minute blues solo that segues into "Born Under a Bad Sign." The remainder of the set draws on material from Bruce's intervening albums. "Theme From an Imaginary Western" is the standout track, complete with anguished guitar soloing courtesy of Sancious.
