Howlin' Wolf first arrived on Chess Records in 1962 and gathers the singles the Chicago bluesman cut between 1957 and 1961. Often called "The Rockin' Chair Album," it captures the raw, electric sound that made Wolf one of the most commanding voices in postwar blues. Willie Dixon, Hubert Sumlin, Sam Lay, and Jimmy Rogers all lend their talents to the sessions.
Wolf's gravelly, thunderous growl drives songs like "Spoonful," "Back Door Man," and "Goin' Down Slow," which are packed with menace, innuendo, and swagger. Sumlin's sharp, angular guitar and Dixon's sly songwriting give the music its edge. The result is a cornerstone of Chess-era electric blues that influenced generations of rock and blues artists.
