Dippin' is a benchmark album in Hank Mobley's superb mid-1960s output, recorded in 1965 during an inspired run of sessions that also produced The Turnaround and A Caddy for Daddy. The great tenor saxophonist leads a quintet with Lee Morgan on trumpet, Harold Mabern Jr. on piano, Larry Ridley on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. Alfred Lion produced the session at Rudy Van Gelder's New Jersey studio.
The music moves easily through boogaloo, bossa nova, ballads, and bop, showing off Mobley's warm tone and relaxed, melodic phrasing. A slow, tender reading of "I See Your Face Before Me" offers a quiet contrast before the band returns to a lively, swinging finish on "Ballin'." Morgan's bright trumpet and the rhythm section's easy groove make this a rewarding listen for hard bop fans and newcomers alike.
