At 72 years old, Dallas soul artist Gypsy Mitchell is releasing his debut album — and the story behind it makes Love Is… Infinite one of the most compelling soul records of 2024. A co-founder of legendary gospel funk group The Relatives (Heavy Light/Daptone) in 1970, Gypsy spent decades on the Chitlin' Circuit playing guitar alongside R&B heavyweights like Johnnie Taylor, The Bar-Kays, and Joe Simon. His raw vocals draw comparisons to Bobby Womack and Darondo, while his guitar work echoes the spirit of Nile Rodgers and Ernie Isley.
Produced by Zach Ernst and Matthew Strmiska (Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears) and released on Modulor Music, Love Is… Infinite is a refined, quintessentially Texan record that blurs the boundaries between vintage soul and contemporary psychedelic and breakbeat sounds. Featuring guests including Houston rap legend Paul Wall, Hi Rhythm keyboardist Archie Turner, and arranger Pete Lanctot (Aaron Frazer, Durand Jones & the Indications), the album is a deeply personal collection of ten songs that feel both timeless and forward-looking — the work of an artist with nothing to prove and everything to say.
