Grinderman is the self-titled debut from the band Nick Cave formed with fellow Bad Seeds Warren Ellis, Martyn Casey, and Jim Sclavunos. It was a deliberate step away from the polish of Cave's other work, favoring a raw, noisy, garage-leaning sound. Ellis's feral guitar and bouzouki lines drive much of the record's menace.
The songs are loud, lurching, and darkly funny, mixing wry, tongue-in-cheek crudeness with a surprising number of catchy hooks. Tracks like "Heathen Child" pair a slithering, funky rhythm section with blasphemous, comedic lyrics. The result is a rowdy, unpredictable rock record that shows a more unhinged side of Cave's songwriting.
