2nd is the synth-pop breakout from New York songwriter Grace Ives, first released in 2019 on Dots Per Inch. Written, performed, and produced largely by Ives herself, it pairs lo-fi electronic textures with hooks that stick after a single listen. It's a playful, confident record that helped set the tone for everything she's done since.
Ives follows a "keep it simple" approach, building songs like "Butterfly" and "Mansion" from just a handful of notes and tapping into the scrappy spirit of bands like Bratmobile and Minutemen. Across the record she slips between characters, from a giddy romantic to a skulking menace to an eager troublemaker, with her synth work shifting to match each mood. The result is fun, danceable, and full of personality.
