Recorded in April 1961 at Van Gelder Studios, Hub Cap finds trumpeter Freddie Hubbard emerging in the early years of his Blue Note career as both a commanding player and a gifted composer. He leads a sextet featuring Julian Priester, Jimmy Heath, Cedar Walton, Larry Ridley, and Philly Joe Jones, a lineup that gives the date plenty of muscle and swing.
The music is hard bop at its most confident, from the hard-charging title track to the richly textured "Luana" and the swaggering shuffle of "Osie Mae." Hubbard's bright tone and fearless phrasing sit atop a rhythm section that never lets up, making Hub Cap a standout among the early-'60s classics that established his reputation.
