Enneads is the self-titled debut from the New York trio of pianist Phyllis Chen, drummer Hamir Atwal, and Zach Layton on the 17-string electric bass, an unusual instrument. Recorded over two years in Layton's studio in New York's Hudson Valley, the album distills the group's improvisational approach into a record where jazz meets experimental music.
The emphasis is on texture and process rather than conventional melody. Harmonics drift into slowly beating patterns, and dreamy, reverberant atmospheres build into dense layers of distortion that recall the gravitational pull of doom and drone metal. Atwal's fluid, hypnotic drumming anchors it all, and the slowed-down passages nod to the work of Pauline Oliveros and Terry Riley.
